Thailand and Cambodia Programs

Minds Abroad's programs in Thailand will introduce students to royal palaces, the famous Emerald Buddha Temple, the historic Ayuthhaya World Heritage park, an elephant conservatory as well as the grand performance of Siam Niramit portraying Thai art and culture in Bangkok. Our programs in Cambodia will offer a peek into ancient Hindu and Buddhist art with its fabled temples at Angkor Wat; some of the greatest temples ever built on the face of the earth. As the renowned historian Arnold Toynbee says “Angkor is perhaps the greatest of Man's essays in rectangular architecture that has yet been brought to life.

Thailand

Thailand always packs in a little bit of everything for everyone that never fails to fire up imaginations. Beyond its shallow seas laced with luminous coral reefs, the country is held in high regard for its shimmering temples and figurines of Buddha rimmed in gold. A history buff can step back in time and take a peek into the country's glorious past by visiting the historical parks of Sukothai that enshrine the ruins of the capital of the Sukhothai kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries. For someone who is an explorer at heart and is angling for scenic beauty, Chiang Mai, a city in northern Thailand, is the perfect fix. Surrounded by lush-green hills, Chiang Mai provides brilliant opportunities of hiking and is close to a cluster of minority villages where time comes to a halt. The Thai capital of Bangkok, set against a mind-numbing cacophony of motorbikes and cycles, beautifully combines urban mayhem with historical charms. Like many other Thai cities, Bangkok is a rich storehouse of museums and temples that have put Thailand on the map. For animal lovers, Lampang holds a lot of appeal because this city is the hub of Thailand's largest elephant conservation park that shelters elephants rescued from atrocious acts of cruelty and negligence.

Cambodia

Cambodia is home to the former Khmer empire and many of the world's most phenomenal temples. For someone, who wants to come face to face with history and mull over the ruins of ancient civilizations, their dramatic rise and fall, Cambodia is a must-see destination. The town of Siem Reap is the doorway to the land of fabled temples, where every brick whispers history, narrating stories of lofty human ambitions, unstinted spiritual devotion and battles gone awry. Angkor Wat, the pride of Cambodia and a global icon, enshrines the majestic relics of the Khmer Empire, including the daunting yet incredibly beautiful Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, the walled capital of the empire that stares right back in the face. In 802 AD, Jayavarman ascended the throne of Cambodia, laying the foundation stone of the Khmer Empire which flourished for over 600 years, amassing great wealth and allowing successive Hindu monarchs to rule the empire. This Hindu kingdom paved the way for the foundation of Angkor Wat. It was equally responsible for the propagation of Hinduism and Buddhism in much of Southeast Asia. However, Angkor was taken over by the Ayuththaya in the 15th Century. Although the grandeur of other temples beyond this temple complex has been dwarfed by the heavenly beauty of Angkor Wat, they are no less popular and are worth a peek to discern the history of the place.
