The Flower & Bird Market

More than what the name implies, the Bird and Flower Market is a fascinating place if you are interested in special local commodities. It is worthwhile visiting just to see the various kinds of ethnic items. Opened in 1983 in the center of Kunming City, the Bird and Flower Market initially sold various kinds of flowers, birds, fish, and insects. Because of its special items, more and more people are attracted to this market.  As more and more foreign visitors come, it is becoming a popular place for purchasing and sightseeing. There is a wide range of items available including flowers, pets, typical ethnic costumes from Yunnan, jade and jewelry and Chinese antiques. It's a perfect place if you are thinking of buying yourself, your family members or friends some local souvenirs. As the heart of old Kunming town, there used to be many traditional Kunming buildings in this region, and lately there has been massive renovation going on with the purpose of bringing back some of the old flavor to this rapidly modernizing city.

Located in the center of Kunming City, the Bird and Flower Market can be easily accessed by taking buses or a taxi. It is within walking distance from many other interesting places within downtown Kunming City, such as the Archway of Golden Horse and Green Rooster, Nanpin Shopping and Pedestrian Street, Yunnan Provincial Museum and Green Lake.

People come to the shores of Dianchi Lake for sightseeing and recreational purposes. From November through March of each year, a great number of sea gulls migrate from Siberia to this area because of the warmer weather.
