India Study and Travel

2014 India Study + Travel Program

July 2nd till July 26th - $3885

In our program, students will have the opportunity to opt for classroom lectures on Hindi in Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh) on weekday mornings (Mon-Thurs). The program will also create opportunities for hands-on volunteer service learning with children or underprivileged women in the afternoons. Coupled with this weekends will be devoted to academic travel to sites of historic and cultural importance to different metropolitan cities, ethnic minority towns and tribal villages to give a holistic feel of the people and cultures of India.

Optional Hindi Class Taught by Experienced Teachers from Local Institutions

Hindi is the national language of India and learning some Hindi will be of utmost help even though a large majority of people speak some basic English. Students enrolling in this program will all form a group and enroll in classes with a teacher in elementary spoken Hindi.

Afternoon Volunteer Service Learning Among Disadvantaged Women and Children

Arunachal Pradesh encounters economic problems mainly stemming out of its poor connectivity and seclusion from the major metropolises of India. Rugged and inhospitable terrain, fragile infrastructure, dependence on the central government for mobilization of resources, sparse population and a sheer absence of the private sector has resulted in underdevelopment. Most of the population in Arunachal Pradesh live in scattered villages and its educational sector is markedly underdeveloped. Students will be taking up placements in community service among local NGOs working in poverty alleviation projects for the villagers in the region or offering help and relief to homeless dependants, disadvantaged women and orphaned children. This will not only be a rewarding experience for the people who will be helped but also for the participant as they will learn a lot about Indian society and culture through their community service.

Weekend Academic Tours

As a part of our programs students will visit large metropolitan cities, smaller villages within the countryside, and heritage towns. We believe this gives students a balanced perspective of the urban India and also rural society where the majority of the people still live in. Some the places of interest that these programs will take you to in India are Delhi, Kolkata, the spiritual centers of Varanasi and Bodh Gaya and Himalayan towns and tribal villages like Itanagar, Ziro, Tawang and others in India’s scenic Northeast. During their stay in India we encourage students to participate in cultural activities to get an in-depth understanding of the ways of life of the local people.
