Our Partner University

Minds Abroad’s partner university in Kunming is Yunnan Nationalities University.  Yunnan Nationalities
is located at the beautiful Lotus Pond in the northern suburbs of Kunming. It is a comprehensive
university of arts, science, management, and languages.  The university was founded in 1951 as the
Yunnan Nationalities Institute, with the initial mission being to train government leaders to further the
economic opportunities available to Yunnan’s minority ethnic groups and to ensure their political rights.
In 2003, the school changed its name to Yunnan Nationalities University and has been developing its
programs and increasing cooperation with foreign academic institutions ever since.

Today, Yunnan Nationalities University has over 5,000 students studying in a wide variety of programs.
The student body consists of people from Yunnan’s many ethnic minorities as well as China’s majority Han
population. The university has also welcomed students from over 80 countries to study on its campus and
has cultivated partnerships with 26 major international institutions. The course of study offered at
Nationalities University
includes typical programs like economics, mathematics and history as well
as ones in minority languages and cultures that are at the center of the university’s founding mission.

Yunnan Nationalities University also has a library with a large collection of ancient texts from Yunnan’s
history and a large museum housing a collection of over 30,000 artifacts that represents the history of
’s ethnic minority communities.
