Our Study+Travel combine language class, volunteer service learning and weekend travel in Asia. Through these summer programs, students will get an authentic insight into the modern day China. In addition to its fast-paced metropolises of Beijing and Shanghai, our programs take students to China's interior, its heartland in central and western China.
Our programs visit Beijing, Shanghai and Yunnan Province, Lonely Planet's top choice in China. These are perfect destinations for cultural immersion because of their great diversity of land and people. From Tibetan towns in the Himalayan north to Thai villages in the tropical rainforests of the south and centuries old Han Chinese towns in between, Yunnan is the perfect microcosm of China. As Lonely Planet says, "If you have time for but one province in China, Yunnan should be it".
During weekdays in Kunming, students will attend Mandarin Chinese classes in the mornings. They will either engage in volunteering activities, internships or participate in language exchange sessions with local Chinese students in the afternoons. Volunteering will primarily revolve around working with underprivileged children in local non-profit organizations. However we also have other types of placement. Students are free to participate in various cultural activities during the evening and they will travel to various sites of historical and cultural interest in Asia over the weekend.
These programs are led by a Minds Abroad team leader and cover all onsite arrangements like meals, accommodations and logistics. After the program has ended, students will have the option of enrolling in weeks of intensive Mandarin classes and continuing their afternoon activities.
We try to give students a balanced perspective of Asia by taking them to typical metropolitan cities as well as rural areas where the majority of the people of both these countries live.

For students studying in the Fall Semester (September through December) or the Spring Semester (February through April), the basic program fee covers a private room in a shared apartment (i.e. students do not have to pay any additional fee for a private room).
Our program fee DOES NOT include visa fees or the cost of a student's flight from the home country to the starting city of our program and then the flight back home from the final city in our program.
Morning Mandarin Classes, Volunteer Service Learning, or Internship: We work with our partner university for these classes. They arrange for both the curricula and teachers. Our Mandarin classes are exclusive in the sense that each class has usually 2-4 students to allow for the most student-teacher interaction. We accommodate a maximum of 7 students in each class. Classes are held for about 3 hours 45 minutes every morning from Mon-Thurs totaling to 15 hours of class per week.
Participants can also choose to do full day internships or volunteering and forgo any form of morning class. Minds Abroad can find meaningful volunteer service learning and intern opportunities for both mornings and afternoons which can keep students active and engaged for the entire day.
Afternoon Volunteer Service Learning, Language Exchange, Internship or Cultural Activities: Our service learning projects in China focus on a number of areas including education--mostly English teaching. For this program we collaborate with many local NGOs which we have developed partnerships with over the years.
There is simply no better way to practice one's listening and speaking skills than by having regular conversations with a native speaker; so Minds Abroad arranges for language exchange programs with students from local schools and communities. Alternatively, students can opt for our internship program for an additional fee. We have a number of internship placements available across various areas.
Finally we also arrange afternoon activities and workshops for students. These activities give students insight into a different aspect of local culture.
Culture Immersion with Chinese Peers: Students participating in our China-only programs will have the chance to interact with their Chinese peers from local schools and universities, who will also be an integral part of these programs. Aside Mandarin classes which the local students will not attend, this whole program will provide for deeper culture exchange, as students will share apartments as well as participate in volunteer work and excursions together with their Chinese friends. This will not only allow for language exchange, but by living and interacting with local Chinese students, they will have a profound immersion experience that is at the root of this program.
Spacious Apartments and Meals: Our fully furnished apartments are within a short commute from our office, local department stores and supermarkets. We will provide lunch and dinner at our office from Mon-Fri. For breakfast we keep packed breakfast items in the student apartments and refill them twice a week.
A student can sign up with a friend and both of them will be entitled to a 5% discount. If students sign up with two friends all three of them will get a 10% discount.
